We get a lot of questions about the recommended size of grout lines for authentic, handmade Mexican saltillo tile. The rule of thumb is this: The bigger the tile is, the wider the grout line needed.
Because Saltillo (also known as terra cotta or terracotta tile) tile is a handmade clay tile, there is slight variation in the size of each tile. A wider grout line will accomodate for that variation in size. For example, a 12×12 inch handmade tile needs 1/2″ - 5/8″ grout line. Our largest Saltillo tile, 24×24, needs about an inch grout line. Grout lines with this type of rustic tile add to its charm.
A sanded grout is needed for saltillo tile and the traditional color is cement gray. Go with what you like - different looks can be created with different colored grout! Customize your floor and when installation is finishing the grout is dry, apply 1 coat of any of our protecting sealers to preserve your floor for many, many years!
